Centenary reflections
We, the Balfour100 Committee:
• Give thanks for the decision of His Majesty’s Government on
31 October 1917 which resulted in a letter, commonly known as
the Balfour Declaration, being sent to Lord Rothschild, promising
British support for the establishment in Palestine of a National
Homeland for the Jewish people
• Acknowledge that this Declaration was incorporated into
International Law as part of the Mandate for Palestine agreed
unanimously by the League of Nations and therefore remains valid to this day
• Regret that Britain did not live up to its Mandatory Power obligations regarding the establishment
of a Jewish Homeland in Palestine, and at times actively worked to frustrate that goal
• Are appalled that many hundreds of thousands of Jewish people were prevented from immigrating
to Palestine during the Nazi era in Europe and were thereby condemned to die in the Holocaust
• Rejoice with the Jewish people that they were able to declare their Statehood on 14 May 1948,
albeit against much opposition
• Give glory to God that, “He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep,” (Psalm 121:4)
and continues to fulfil his covenant with the Jewish people as recorded in Genesis 15
• Pledge to continue to support the people of Israel prayerfully and practically as ‘Partners in this
Great Enterprise’ as we await the fulfilment of the Scriptures concerning the end of this age
